Dr. John Perumal earned a Bachelors of Liberal Arts degree in Biology from Spicer Memorial College in 1978 and a Masters of Science degree in Plant Physiology from Pune University in 1984. He received his Ph.D. degree in Eco-Physiology from the University of Western Ontario, Canada in 1994. He served as an assistant professor of biology at Southern Adventist University in Tennessee from 1994 to 1999. He then moved to Thailand and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Mission College until 2002 when he joined La Sierra University.
Dr. John Perumal teaches Microbe and Plant Diversity, Survey of Biological Principles, Biology Seminar, General Ecology, Environmental Science, Systematic Botany, Humans and the Environment and General Biology. He initiated the TriBeta (National Biological Honors Society) Club at La Sierra and is currently the advisor of the Environmental club. He is also a member of the board of trustees for Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful.
Dr. John Perumals centers his research work in the area of plant ecology, and physiology and deals with looking at the ecological responses of plants to various physiological cues. He also works with mycorrhizal associations in native California grasses and Mohave Desert plants. He utilizes both lab and field methods to address questions concerning the ecology and physiology of plant populations and communities.
Memberships and Affiliations
Dr. John Perumal is a member of the Ecological Society of America, Botanical Society of America, Nature Conservancy, Southern California Botanists, California Native Plant Society and a graduate member of Tri Beta Society. The students of the biology department chose him as the Biology Teacher of the Year for 2004. He was also awarded the Advisor of the year for the College of Arts and Sciences for the 2005-2006 academic year.
