XANDER KNECHT, violin & viola

Alexander Knecht was born in Chapel Hill, NC, grew up in Ada, OH, and moved to Loma Linda, CA in 2004. He began taking violin lessons at the age of eight in 1999, and viola lessons as well in 2012. In 2009 he enrolled at La Sierra University as a National Merit scholar majoring in music and mathematics. He collaborated with Dr. Vanderwerff at La Sierra on a theorem resulting in a short paper that was presented at a conference at Simon Fraser University in 2011. Although initially a violin major, this academic year he began serious studies on the viola with Juan-Miguel Hernandez. In the La Sierra University Orchestra he has served as concertmaster, principal second violin and principal viola and is active in chamber music at school on both violin and viola. As a member of Junior Chamber Music (JCM), his group received first place in the 2013 JCM-USC competition. In 2008 he attended the Aspen Music Festival, and will return this summer as a fellowship student of Masao Kawasaki on viola. He has also attended the Montecito International Music Festival in Santa Barbara and been accepted into the Music Academy of the West. He is active in church, community and family performances, including appearances at the Loma Linda Broadcasting Network and Loma Linda University Church. He has volunteered playing the violin at the Jerry Pettis Memorial VA Hospital and LLU Medical Center in Loma Linda, and has been a mentor teaching strings in the CKC-Music community engagement program in San Bernardino since its founding in 2008. As an amateur composer and arranger, he has enjoyed writing a number of transcriptions and arrangements of light repertoire for performance by school chamber groups or solo violin or viola, as well as several original compositions. He has restored a number of vintage road bicycles as a hobby, and has long been a chess enthusiast, playing in several clubs and tournaments.
