Five graduating artists and designers of the Department of Art + Design are exhibiting their senior show through June 14, displaying a wide range of media that includes drawing, graphic posters and textiles, interactive and digital media.

Artists and designers David Chen, Rachel Cho, Rose Ek, Annemarie Gregory and Cat Kent address a number of issues important to their generation through their work, and show the furthered development of their artistic voice and vision.

Chen is exhibiting eight pieces and some digital animation works in the show. They include a book sculpture of old books shaped like grand pianos with music scores flaming upward, acrylic paint and charcoal drawings, relief prints and screen prints, and an installation piece comprised of origami, fishing wire and chipboard. He worked roughly 400 hours in total on his exhibit pieces.

Chen, a native of Taiwan, is a pre-dentistry major and an art major, which a minor in chemistry. After graduation he will enter a Master of Biomedical Science program at Rutgers University in New Jersey and apply for admission to dental schools.

Chen couldn’t give up either dentistry or art. “Maybe I will be both part-time dentist and artist,” he said. The love of science and art is in his genes. His mother is a nurse as well as a painter.

“Science is always looking for an answer, whereas art is always looking for a question,” said Chen in his artist’s statement. “The most significant reason why I love art is because it invites people to think and explore the world and ourselves.”

“Through art I find tranquility and peace. The process of making art is sometimes greater than the outcome, and the beauty of success in life is often found in the process.”

Gallery hours are Mon. – Thurs., noon – 7 p.m. The gallery is located in the Visual Art Center. Admission is free. La Sierra University is located at 4500 Riverwalk Parkway, Riverside. For further information call 951-785-2170.
