Art prof’s work exhibited in elite U.S. Embassy show

Last month, La Sierra University Assistant Professor of Art Tim Musso traveled to Bulgaria, to participate in a prestigious, international art show sponsored by the U.S. Embassy.

Musso’s 12"x16" wood engraving print titled, "Rite of the Dendroctonus Jefferyi" was curated into an exhibition titled “Contemporary U.S. Printmaking.” The exhibition was coordinated with the 7th Annual Triennial of Graphic Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria at the National Academy of Art. The triennial and supporting exhibitions is a curated event that occurs every three years. It is an international exhibition featuring the best in contemporary graphic art. 

The exhibition was held Nov. 10-30. Musso attended the opening on Nov. 10 and participated in a roundtable discussion on Nov. 11. The roundtable presentation featured the exhibition curators, some of the participating artists, and students from the National Academy of Art. Topics covered in the discussion included “Technology vs. Traditional Technique” and “State of Contemporary Printmaking in the World.”

“I was able to meet artists from all over the world, make studio visits to local artists, and trade prints,” Musso said. Bulgarian artists he met and traded prints with included Vasil Kolev, Iva Sankova, Peter Velakov, Julien Jordanov. He also met with curators Onnik Karanfilian, Vasil Kolev, Jose Guedes of Brazil, Breda Skrjanec of Slovakia, Marc Frising of Luxembourg.

“In addition to art-related activities, I got to explore the cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, and Rila which all have fascinating historical structures from the Thracians, Romans, Ottomans, and Soviets,” commented Musso. “I particularly enjoyed seeing the architecture, mosaics, icons, and gilded domes of the many orthodox churches.”
