Tammi Schneider, professor of Hebrew Bible at the theology school, will give a talk titled “Women in the Book of Genesis: What Do We Do with Them?” for La Sierra’s annual Paul Landa Lecture. The lecture will be held Sat., Feb. 28 at 4 p.m., in the Troesh Conference Center of La Sierra’s Zapara School of Business. Admission is free.

The presentation will be followed by a faculty response given by Wonil Kim, associate professor of Old Testament studies with La Sierra’s H.M.S. Richards Divinity School.

Schneider will examine the women depicted in Genesis and how newer approaches to examining the texts increases understanding.

Schneider, who is also dean of Claremont Graduate University’ School of Arts and Humanities, received her doctorate in ancient history from the University of Pennsylvania and has written several books. She teaches ancient history, ancient Near Eastern languages and literature, archaeology of Israel, and women in the Hebrew Bible. Her research merges archaeology, biblical studies, and the study of ancient Mesopotamia, or ancient Iraq toward a greater understanding of the ancient Near East. Her various activities include serving as vice president of the American Schools of Oriental Research in Boston. She has worked on numerous archaeological excavations in Israel and in 2010 served as head of the educational program at the Tel Akko Excavations.

The Landa Lecture has been an annual presentation of La Sierra’s H.M.S. Richards Divinity School the past 16 years. The series commemorates the legacy of the late Paul J. Landa, a professor of the history of Christianity at Loma Linda and La Sierra universities for 26 years. Landa inspired others with his passion for intellectual integrity, faith and commitment. He was also known for his expertise and futuristic vision in strategic planning for churches and educational institutions.
