World-renowned percussionist Mayuto Correa to play Pierce Street Jazz series

Eminent Brazilian percussionist Mayuto Correa, a multi-talented artist in several fields, will bring his high-energy performance to La Sierra University’s Troesh Conference Center in a Pierce Street Jazz series concert.

Correa will play an array of percussion instruments as well as guitar with a trio of seasoned jazz industry musicians on Wed., April 1 at 7 p.m. Joining him are bassist Henry “the Skipper” Franklin, pianist Theo Saunders and drummer Ramon Banda. During the concert, Correa plans to raffle free copies of his acclaimed CD, "Mayuto & Genuises 2000 Live!"

Correa, a renowned musician, composer, arranger, conductor, musical director and producer has for more than three decades pursued his various interests with wide success, amassing a long roster of credits that includes recording sessions and concerts with Cannonball Adderley, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Trini Lopez, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Michael Jackson and many other famous acts.

He was a soloist and featured artist on Burt Bacharach’s “Woman” album and on Henry Mancini’s “Symphonic Soul,” and has appeared at numerous top jazz festivals including those in Monterey and Newport. He has soloed at Carnegie Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Apollo Theater, Hollywood Bowl and other prestigious venues, and played on many television program soundtracks and for television shows including “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. His accomplishments have been noted in The Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Seventies and in Dicionario da Musica Popular Brasileira.

He has also written and directed works for theater and film and composed musicals.

Correa was born in Rio de Janeiro where he was introduced to theatrical drama as a young child, and where he began performing percussion in local bands and composing music at age 12. Years later, after working in Mexico with a Brazilian bossa nova group, he moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s where he made a name for himself in the Hollywood music industry.
