Student Employment

Student employees play a vital role in filling employment needs in many areas of the university and are an integral part of the success of La Sierra University. Without student employees, it would be very difficult to fill employment needs and do so within budgetary guidelines in many departments of the university.

As part of the Office of Human Resources, we are dedicated to helping you find a job on campus and ensuring that you get the most out of your employment experiences throughout your time at La Sierra University. This section of our website is designed as a student resource for understanding on-campus student employment at La Sierra University. You will find information about the different types of employment for which you can apply, as well as how to get started searching for a job on campus, and the paperwork we will need from you before you start working. We have a helpful “FAQ” section which will provide even more clarity to the process. As always, if you have any questions that aren’t addressed here, please feel free to contact our office.

Parent Resources

We are dedicated to helping students find a job on campus and ensuring that they get the most out of their employment experiences throughout their time at La Sierra University.

On-campus employment provides a supportive, non-threatening environment where students can gain valuable job skills like communicating effectively with the public, understanding the value of teamwork, learning the significance of personal responsibility and accountability in a work environment, developing time management and computer skills, and building self-confidence. Simply the act of completing the application process for on-campus jobs gives students an opportunity to experience real-world job search scenarios; highlighting the importance of well-developed resumes and cover letters, as well as providing valuable interview experience.

We look forward to helping students understand and make the most of the valuable career skills they can gain from their on-campus employment experiences at La Sierra University.

The following are three ways that you can assist your students:

  1. Help to ensure your student has the necessary identification documents to complete mandatory employment forms.  The most common issue that students face when hired for a job is not having their original, unexpired I-9 documents with them on campus. Please refer to this list to ensure that your student comes to campus with the federally required ID documents.
  2. Encourage your students to explore employment options while maintaining balance with their academics.  On average students work eight to twelve hours per week, however balance is the key and individual work commitments will vary from student to student.
  3. Talk to your students about their work.  By exploring career paths now, many students are able to identify future goals.  While maintaining employment provides positive financial benefits, the experience also assists students as they explore the myriad of options ahead.

As always, if you have any questions that aren’t addressed here, feel free to contact our office.

Sponsors

National Student Employment Week (NSEW) presents a unique and rare opportunity for your business to have an on-campus marketing presence. Just as last year, all sponsors will be recognized on promotional signage at each event and in all marketing materials. You can be a sponsor in one of the following ways:

  1. Offering a discount or special promotion during the month of April to La Sierra University student employees who present a pay stub and a La Sierra University student ID. Examples: $5 off a meal, free Danish with purchase of coffee drink; 10% off any purchase; reduced admission prices; buy one get one free, etc.
  2. Provide an item to be included in the drawing to take place during NSEW. Examples: Gift cards; Gift baskets; T-shirts; Tickets, etc.
  3. Provide promotional items to be handed out to students during the week.

Thank you to those who have already committed their support! For more information on National Student Employment Week, please contact Desiree Noah at dfnoah@lasierra.edu or (951)785-2088.

Student Employment FAQ

Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally-funded financial aid program awarded to students based on their eligibility determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) along with other financial aid criteria. Funding for this program is limited. Students are awarded a specific amount, and the federal government subsidizes the wages to the employer. This means that La Sierra University pays a portion of the wages and FWS pays the remaining portion.

Please Note:  The receipt of a financial aid award does not guarantee a job.

This is a common misconception and we are happy to provide clarification. Students are not allowed to do homework or study while at work at their on-campus job, regardless of whether they are work study or non-work study employees. The purpose of the Federal Work Study program (FWS), according to the Department of Education, is as follows:  “The FWS Program provides funds for part-time employment to help needy students to finance the costs of postsecondary education. […] A student’s FWS compensation is earned when the student performs the work.”

You are under no obligation to continue working for a department that you do not wish to. Due to the scarcity of on-campus jobs however, it may not be easy to find another position. If you come across the opportunity to move to another department and discontinue working in the original department, please let us know so that we can terminate your original student employment authorization form.

Yes. You are required to adhere to the policies and requirements of your department as well as your job description. Failure to do so can result in your termination from the position. To prevent this from happening, it is important that you fully understand your job description and the duties that are required of you.

This can vary from department to department, but typically, once the position is removed from our webpage, students can expect correspondences via telephone or email within 2 weeks of removal of the posting. Make sure to check the email account that you applied through daily, as you do not want to miss correspondence from an interested hiring department.

Positions are constantly being posted. However, many positions for the upcoming academic year (both work study and non-work study) are posted as early as mid-summer. It is best to apply for them before or during the first couple of weeks of the year. We recommend that you keep checking the website for new job openings throughout the year that meet your qualifications.

Students typically work between 10-20 hours per week. One’s workload depends on the student’s availability as well as the department’s need. However, International (F-1) students are limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session.

All financial aid awards are only available for one academic year. You must re-apply every year for financial aid and work-study. Make sure to meet with your Financial Aid Counselor in Student Financial Services if you have questions about your specific work study award or any other financial aid matter.

No, student employees are not eligible for health, dental, medical or vision benefits while employed.

The following are needed in order to complete your student employee file.

You need to bring original, unexpired ID documents from this list to campus. They can either be:

  • One document from List A
  • One from List B AND one from List C

In accordance with federal law, you will not be able to work on campus unless you have the required documents above to present before working. Note:  We cannot accept copies.

Employees are paid bi-weekly on Friday’s. A payroll schedule can be found on the payroll webpage.

Workforce Ready is our Timekeeping system that we use on campus to keep track of the hours that you work. Your supervisor will let you know where you are to clock in and out for work (on a computer versus an actual timeclock).
