DAVID KENDALL
Dr. David Kendall is an adjunct professor of music at LSU, teaching Musicianship courses, Brass Methods, and lessons in Tuba, Trombone and Euphonium. Additionally, Dr. Kendall also serves as a Lecturer in Music at the University of California, Riverside (teaching Musicianship and Music Appreciation), a brass instructor at Loma Linda Academy (teaching tuba, trombone, euphonium and trumpet), and the Director of Music Ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Riverside. He also serves on the board of directors for Makibahagi, a Filipino-American cultural association based in Corona, and is the musical director for the Armory Band, a Civil War reenacting ensemble playing period instruments and repertoire for Civil War events as well as for television and film.
Dr. Kendall specializes in the liturgical music of the Spanish Colonial Philippines (1565-1898), and travels to the Philippines often to present and conduct his research. He also specializes in organology (the study of musical instruments) and period performance practice.
Dr. Kendall hails from sunny Phoenix, Arizona, graduating from Thunderbird Adventist Academy in 1998. After graduation from La Sierra University, he spent 2002 and 2003 as an English, Bible and Music teacher in Pingtung, Taiwan, and still maintains the friendships he made there, though his Mandarin Chinese has suffered greatly due to lack of practice. Hel is married to his wife Shiela May, and they live in Riverside with their two daughters, Carmina and Mikaela.
Dr. Kendall enjoys reading, writing, bicycle riding, hiking and traveling.
GIOVANNI SANTOS
Music educator and freelance trumpet performer in Southern California, is Director of Bands at Loma Linda Academy, a position he has held since 2008. Mr. Santos is also the Adjunct Trumpet Professor at La Sierra University.
Santos has performed nationwide as a soloist and chamber musician, including a solo performance for the 2010 Park City Film Festival Jury Choice for Best Impact in a Musical Score, “Actually, Adieu My Love” by Jay Kim. He has performed as principal trumpet under the direction of noted composers and conductors, including Yasuo Shinozaki, Carl St. Clair, Alfred Reed, Frank Ticheli, and H. Robert Reynolds.
As an educator and conductor, Mr. Santos travels across the United States yearly to perform and conduct for band festivals and clinics. Most recently, he was guest conductor and performer for the Northern New England Conference Music Festival and the Atlantic Union Conference Band Clinic. Mr. Santos recently attended the Northwestern University Conducting and Wind Band Symposium, where he was a conducting student of H. Robert Reynolds, Dr. Timothy Robblee, and Dr. Mallory Thompson.
Mr. Santos is a graduate of La Sierra University (B. Mus) and the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music (MM). Santos was also a scholarship trumpet student at the University of North Texas, College of Music. His main trumpet mentors and instructors were Dr. Richard Hofmann, John Holt, Boyde Hood, and Donald Green.
ELVIN S. RODRIGUEZ
Elvin Rodríguez is currently Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at La Sierra University. Dr. Rodríguez also coordinates the Music Technology program, and is the University's Director of University Studies. Dr. Rodríguez frequently performs in solo and chamber recitals, and has presented at local, state, and national workshops and conferences in the areas of Baroque keyboard performance practice, improvisation for beginners, and the integration of music technology in the piano curriculum. Dr. Rodríguez continues to research and develop computerized, on-line courseware for music education, specifically in the area of music theory, and continues to compose music, specially for the choral medium. Dr. Rodríguez has worked with national and international prize winning pianists and is a frequent adjudicator for advanced and professional adjudications and competitions.
KIRK UDVARDI, saxophone
KIRK UDVARDI, originally from Indiana, earned Bachelors degrees in Saxophone and Music Education from Indiana University South Bend and Masters degrees in Saxophone and Woodwind Doubling from the University of Redlands in California. His teachers were Phillip Rehfeldt, Matthew Levy and Charles Atkins. In 1988 he was the recipient of IUSB’s Excellence in Music Award and at the U. of R., received the 1992 Performance Award and membership to Pi Kappa Lambda. He was the winner of the 1986 IUSB Concerto Competition, a finalist in the National Association of Composers, Young Performers Competition and a semi-finalist at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition with the St. Alfonzo Saxophone Quartet.
Mr. Udvardi was highly praised by Saxophone Journal for his performance at the 1990 New Sounds Music Festival. He was a frequent performer with Barney Childs’ New Music Ensemble and can be heard on Rastascan Records in performance with Dave Tohir and the “Anything Goes Orchestra.” Mr. Udvardi has made numerous appearances as soloist with orchestras and wind ensembles in both California and Indiana. A strong proponent of contemporary music, he has premiered works by Reginald Bain, Harold Budd, Barney Childs, Jim Fox, Christopher Hobbs, Gary Smart, Angie Jelliffe and Scott Vance, among others. His publications include The Complete Guide for the Musical Saxophonist (Saxophobia Productions). In California he has been an instructor at San Bernardino Valley College, La Sierra University and at the University of Redlands. Currently he is Assistant Band Director at Loma Linda Academy where he teaches 5th and 6th Grade Bands, coaches the saxophone and clarinet quartets and gives private lessons.
