The on-line catalog records all books held in the Library’s collections. You can search by the name of the author, the title of a book, the subject of a book, or any word in the author or title. Subject headings used are those listed in the Library of Congress Subject Headings. The 5 (red) volumes of this work are located on a table near the catalog computers. When looking for a book by subject, it is always best to check the proper form of a subject heading in this source first.
The Library holds current subscriptions to more than 1500 periodicals. In addition, the Library has backfiles for these and nearly 2000 non-current titles. The List of Serials, a light-blue spiral-bound book, is a complete record of titles and issues which the Library holds. Before going to the periodical stacks on the third floor (west), it is wise to consult this source first to see if the Library holds the particular issue you require. We do not have all the periodicals listed in the indexes.
Indexes and abstracts provide subject access to periodicals, dissertations, and reviews. In this library, abstracts are arranged in alphabetical order by title at the end of the cataloged Reference collection. The indexes are cataloged as part of the Reference collection. Some are located on the index tables in front of the Reference desk, and others are shelved in the Reference stacks. In addition to printed indexes and abstracts, the Library provides access more than 200 databases on a wide variety of topics. The power of the computer applied to the task of finding specific information in periodicals can save time and often retrieve important information that would be missed otherwise. Many of the periodical indexes, including the ATLA Religion Index and Proquest Religion are available online. FirstSearch, a databank that provides access to more than 40 databases, includes several more databases that may be helpful when researching topics in religion. Ask a reference librarian for further information about using FirstSearch or for assistance with searching any of the computer databases. DIALOG, a larger on-line service, may be searched by special arrangement. A fee is charged to recover the direct costs of such computer searches. Fees may range from $15 to $25 depending on the database searched, number of references retrieved, and complexity of the search.

These list important religious figures of past and present ages. Note that encyclopedias will also usually contain biographies of many religious figures (the New Catholic Encyclopedia in particular is very good on early and medieval church history as well as saints.)

The Heritage Room, located on the bottom floor of the library, contains material by and about Seventh-day Adventists and La Sierra University.
Books in the Heritage Room do not circulate. In many cases, particularly books by Ellen White, duplicate copies are available for check-out in the main stacks or the White Collection on the third floor. The on-line catalog will tell you where copies are available.
The Heritage Room also holds all the library’s Seventh-day Adventist-related periodicals, as well as files of published and unpublished documents dealing with La Sierra University.
