[La Sierra University Library]

Reference Desk

The Reference Desk is the front-line service for information assistance to Library users. The librarians working in this area are prepared to respond to a variety of general and specialized information needs. If we cannot answer your questions with our own collection and online services, we will do our best to direct you to other libraries or resources which can meet your needs. Reference Services are available during all library hours, with the exception of lunch and dinner hours (noon to 1:00 PM; 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.) You may request information in person, by calling x2396, or by sending e-mail to library@lasierra.edu

We also have an online question form available.

Services Offered:

Beyond answering reference questions, reference librarians provide a variety of other services. These include:

Assistance with database searches. A variety of databases provided through the Internet are available at the Library and throughout the campus via the computer network. These resources can be searched by faculty, students and staff at no cost to the users. At the Library, the librarian on duty will assist people who need some guidance with the searches.

Training for effective use of databases. While assistance with database searching is provided on the basis of answers to questions from library patrons, we strongly encourage all users to take advantage of the training for database searching provided free of charge by the Library. To request a database training session please call x2396 or email the Reference Desk..

Research Assistance. Reference librarians are available to provide specialized assistance to faculty members involved in research projects. This includes the identification of relevant publications, services and resources available at the University Library and elsewhere.

Course Related Library Instruction. The Library staff recognizes that the most effective method of assisting the students to make effective use of the Library is through assignments related to their class work. In this context, Librarians are eager to cooperate with the teachers of any course in the preparation of Library related class assignments, presentations, orientations or training sessions. For arrangements regarding Library Instruction please call the Reference Desk at x2396.

Internet Training. Beyond assisting the faculty with specific questions related to the Internet the reference librarians will provide training in the use of the Internet resources. This is done upon request. Please contact the Reference Desk at x2396 for more information.

E-mail Information Delivery Service. Through e-mail the Reference Desk is open to receive your information requests 24 hours a day. Whenever possible, the responses to your inquiries and appropriate documentation will be sent to you by e-mail as well. This service may be particularly useful for faculty teaching in off-campus sites and requiring an inexpensive but fast method of receiving Library support. Fill out and submit your question using our online reference form.
