College Writing Instructor Program Policies

Your work as a College Writing Instructor gives you hands-on classroom experience and excellent support for your CV and resume. It gives La Sierra’s College Writing student an energetic and highly motivated instructor, eager to aid them in transforming their writing abilities. It gives the Department of English a means of supporting financially its grad students. The following policies provide a framework for operating the College Writing Instructor Program within the Department of English.

Part 1 – Policies affecting all CWIs

Tenure of Service
CWI appointments begin in Fall and are generally presumed to extend for the three quarters of the school year. Appointments may be reconsidered and revoked, for cause, during or between quarters.
Participation in Training
First-year CWIs will participate in pre-Fall quarter training and register for Engl-606, Composition Theory and Practice, Fall quarter of their first year as a CWI. Second-year CWIs will assist the Director of College Writing in training and mentoring first-year CWIs.
Outside Employment
(under development)
Course Load
Because of the substantial remuneration offered, CWIs are required to register for and complete two courses at the University during each quarter they receive a CWI contract.
Off-Campus Coursework
CWIs wishing to take a course outside the University will need to consider that course an additional load (and should seek prior approval from the Department of English)
Terminating an Appointment
CWI appointments may be terminated prior to one year if an instructor’s performance so warrants; termination is at the discretion of the Director of College Writing, in consultation with the Department of English. Reasons for terminating an appointment may include (but are not limited to):
  • Instructor not attending classes
  • Lack of cooperation with the Director of College Writing
  • Disregard of University, College of Arts and Sciences, or Department of English policies
  • Inattention to student needs or student work
  • Moral turpitude
Appointment Renewal
After successfully completing a one-year appointment, CWIs may apply for a second and final one-year appointment. Because the M.A. in English program (which the CWI program serves) is designed as a two-year full-time program, third year CWI appointments are not offered.

Part 2 – Policies affecting CWIs teaching an additional College Writing section

Second-year CWIs, as well as first-year CWIs with significant teaching experience, may apply to teach a second College Writing class, if additional College Writing instructors are needed.
Suitability
The Director of College Writing, in consultation with the Department of English, will determine the suitability of a candidate for a second CW class. Renewing a first-year CWIs appointment into a second year does not guarantee that the CWI will be offered an additional contract.
Renewal
Similarly, offering a CWI a second contract for one quarter does not guarantee that the CWI will be offered a second contract in a subsequent quarter.
