Education

  • MFA in music (Tuba Performance) California Institute of the Arts, 1986.
  • BA in music (Composition & Performance) from University of California, San Diego, 1984.

Ty Rust is currently Assistant Professor of Music and Co-Director of the Music Technology program at La Sierra University. Mr. Rust has long been involved in the intersection of other arts with music having directed and arranged music for dance theater and created music and sound for theatrical performances. As a performing musician he may be heard on film and television productions such as J.A.G., Dr. Quinn, Michael Hayes, and the Jimmy Kimmel show, as well as video games such as EA's Simpsons Game.

Though music technology was not a degreed program until more recently, Mr. Rust has maintained a lifelong involvement with the use of computer technology in the arts. Having grown up near the UC San Diego campus with it's experimental music focus, he has been involved with the avant-garde and electronic music scenes since childhood. He first hacked a Commodore 64 to use as a microtonal musical instrument and later wrote and published software to convey microtonal scales and keyboard setups to Yamaha's DX7II & TR81Z synthesizers.

His current focus at La Sierra includes the teaching of the music notation software Sibelius and the music production software Logic Pro, as well as investigations into touch screen technology for performance, and the use of generative music software for composition.
