Pre-Health 101

A guide to becoming a competitive applicant for a health professional program

Shape yourself to become a well rounded applicant

Develop your character. Who are you outside of school? Ensure you have people who can attest to your ethics and morale.
Maintain a high GPA. Find ways to create better studying habits, visit the tutoring center,and/or improve your time management skills.

Stay informed. Professional schools are constantly changing requirements, be sure to conduct research and stay up to date with the requirements for your desired program.

Dedicate yourself to service. Several programs expect applicants to be committed to serving their communities, be sure to volunteer, go on mission trips, etc...

Demonstrate passion. Obtain observation hours in clinics, help out your local hospital, and become aware of the expectations for the profession.

Participate in pre-health events

Workshops

Our pre-health office offers a wide plethora of workshops. Some topics include:

  • Exploring Health Care Professions
  • Personal Statement Do's and Dont's
  • GAP Year: Pro's and Con's
  • Loma Linda University (LLU): Career Panel

... and man more!

Consultations

  • One on one appointments with LLU program staff.
  • Stridents receive recommendations on their current profile and are given tips on how to improve their chances for admission.

Join student organizations

  • Professional schools want to see a student active in their campus community.
  • Join clubs & take on leadership roles -Don't see a club you are interested in, Initiate one!

Set yourself up for success

Timelines

Become aware of what is needed for apps and when they need to be completed.

  • On time is late, and early is on time!

Self Evaluation

  • Certain programs require higher PA's and stronger profiles. Be sure to analyze your self readiness and competitiveness.
  • Make an effort to complete a self evaluation early on and make sure your values and interests align with your chosen profession.

Network, Network, Network!

Make time to connect with peers, faculty, external organizations and it can make a huge difference, especially when needing letters of
recommendation!

  • The application process can be confusing and intimidating, especially for first-gen students.
