Going Global: International Study Experience
To become more informed global citizens, your Honors class will travel abroad for three to four weeks following your sophomore year as a required part of your Honors experience. During this time you will register for UHNR 231: Global Cultures in Context - Theory and UHNR 232: Global Cultures in Context - The Experience. Recent courses have been held in Western Europe or Turkey.

Going Global 2014
Location: Singapore and Malaysia
Dates: July 27 - August 15, 2014
COURSES: UHNR 231 & 232. You will register for both Global Cultures in Context courses, UHNR 231: Theories & Perspectives and UHNR 232: The Experience (8 units total). You must attend four class meetings during spring 2014 and one during fall 2014. Course Instructor: John Perumal
COST: $6,216. The cost is tuition only, with no added fees. Everything from LAX back to LAX is included except for personal expenses. Since this is a summer study tour, by university policy the standard (autumn, winter, spring) tuition "package plan" does not apply. Tuition is calculated at the current year's rate (2013-2014, $777/unit) even though the study tour occurs during the 2014-15 academic year.
Make an appointment with Letty Fonseca from Student Financial Services and complete the FAFSA, at some point early in 2014, to work out the best financial aid arrangements for you. Each situation is different and no one magic formula works for all.
Sign up in the Honors Office by January 10, 2014 (first week of winter quarter).
Pay $500 deposit by January 31, 2014. Pay to bursar and submit a copy of the receipt to the Honors Office. The $500 deposit will be used toward the total cost of tuition. Cancel by February 28 for full refund of deposit.
Apply for Going Global Scholarship by April 4, 2014. Small need-based scholarships are available to help off-set the cost of tuition. Please complete the online application.
Copy of Passport to Honors Office April 7, 2014. Must be valid for 6-months from the day of entry: January 2015. U.S. Citizens will not need to apply for a visa prior to departing. Notify Honors Department if you will not have your passport by April 7.
Pay tuition in full by April 25, 2014. ($5,716, tuitions minus deposit). Cancel by May 30 for refund minus deposit.
Watch for communications from the Honors Office and Dr. John Perumal.
Ask questions early and as often as needed.
Students will meet as a class to prepare for the trip during spring quarter.

April 20 - Religions of Southeast Asia- Buddhism & Hinduism
May 04 - Cultures of Southeast Asia – Malay, Chinese, Indian & Iban
May18 - Environmental Concerns in Southeast Asia – Logging, Plantations etc.
The Honors Program with consider all highly motivated applicants. Successful Honors students generally have a high school GPA of 3.7 or higher, or a college GPA of 3.5 or above, as well as combined SAT scores of 1700 or higher, or an ACT score composite of 25 or above. Space is limited, so early application is recommended.
In addition to GPA-based financial awards, special scholarships are given to Honors Program Students. These scholarships usually increase with each year in the program.
