Neuroscience Outcomes & Career Options

Neuroscience prepares students for such careers as neuroscientists, neurologists, neuropsychologists, neurolinguists, neuroaudiologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, biological psychologists, laboratory technicians, doctors, surgeons, dentists, and researchers. Some careers require additional training and/or education.

Educational Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience can qualify students for entry-level positions as laboratory technicians, research assistants, and forensic science technicians. Professional degrees in dentistry and medicine are required for medical practice. For positions such as medical scientists, clinical pharmacology and neurophysiology, a Ph.D. is required.

Job Outlook

Employment of medical scientists is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment of physicians and surgeons is projected to grow 14 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Overall employment of psychologists is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Entering Salary

The median annual wage of biological technicians was $41,650 in May 2015. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $26,610, and the top 10 percent earned more than $69,180.
The median annual wage of environmental scientists and specialists was $67,460 in May 2015. The lowest 10% earned under $40,350 and the top 10% earned over $118,070.
The median annual wage for mathematicians was $111,110 in May 2015. The median annual wage for statisticians was $80,110 in May 2015.
The median annual wage for biochemists and biophysicists was $82,150 in May 2015. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $44,640, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $153,810.
 For students interested in laboratory research, The median annual wage for medical scientists was $82,240 in May 2015. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $44,510, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $155,180.According to the Medical Group Management Association’s Physician Compensation and Production Survey, median total compensation for physicians varies with their type of practice. In 2014, physicians practicing primary care received total median annual compensation of $241,273 and physicians practicing in medical specialties received total median annual compensation of $411,852.The median annual wage for psychologists was $72,580 in May 2015.
