Dr. Shelly S. McCoy is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department of La Sierra University. She completed her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of California, Riverside. Her research focuses primarily on adolescent and emerging adult development and examines the cognitive, social or contextual, and dispositional factors that contribute to the significant increases in health and safety risk taking behaviors (e.g. substance abuse, risky sexual practices, reckless driving) during these periods of the lifespan. She is particularly interested in the reasons why some youth seem to readily engage in risky behaviors while others abstain from activities that may threaten their health or safety. Her class offerings include: General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Career Colloquium, as well as topical seminars in her areas of expertise.
