Social Workers enjoy a flexible and rewarding career in a variety of settings:

Child, Youth & Family Services

In schools, clinics, community and child welfare settings, social workers help children and youth overcome obstacles to reach their full potential by providing coaching and counseling to them and their families.

Healthcare

Social workers help patients cope with their illness by providing crisis intervention, counseling and discharge planning.  Health care settings offer diverse opportunities such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and skilled nursing facilities.

Mental Health

Social workers provide mental health support to help clients heal and find meaning and hope in their lives.  Social workers also engage with client families, providing education and supportive services.

Gerontology

Social workers assist older adults improve their quality of life through counseling and advocacy services.  As the population ages, there will be increased opportunities for social workers in this field.

Community Organizing

Social workers are engaged in advocacy, policy and program development to improve our communities and organizations. This type of work can occur at the local, state, national, and international levels.  

Criminal Justice

Social workers help clients with criminal records rehabilitate and build a better future for themselves. Employment settings include corrections, probation, integration programs and state hospitals.

Substance Abuse

Substance abuse has the potential to impact clients and their families in all areas of practice. Social workers empower clients to break cycles of addiction and find freedom to rebuild their lives. 

Job Outlook and Salary

Overall employment of social workers is projected to grow 12% from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. The national median annual wage for social workers was $45,900 in May 2015, and the highest 10% earned more than $76,820. Wages vary based on specialization and location of job (e.g. state).
