What is BYU FLATS?

The Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services program through Brigham Young University provides credit for over 50 languages.

Students who have acquired a certain level of competency can receive credit for language skill achieved.
Students requesting to pass out of their world language requirement must first purchase the exam from BYU.
To verify that the language in which you wish to test is available, check the BYU FLATS approved listing.

Test Preparation

There are no test preparation materials available. The most successful way to prepare for any given test is to review your reading ability. It is also helpful if you have a friend to practice both listening and speaking of the language.

Make sure to bring:

  • Driver's license or state-issued ID card, current passport, or military ID.
  • Cash or check to pay the fee.
  • Directions to get to La Sierra University

Test Format

Most tests have a listening, reading, and grammar component. The tests are in a multiple choice format, with answers being marked on a scantron answer sheet, not written in the test booklet. Most tests require at least a 60-70% to pass; this varies based on the difficulty of the language. All tests are on a pass/fail basis and graded credit will not be given. Students are allowed two and half hours to complete the test

This test is pass or fail based on level of competency. To determine the number of units you will receive you will need to contact Admissions and Records. Results will be mailed within 6-8 weeks of the testing date from BYU to Admissions and Records. A copy will also be sent to you at the address indicated on the form, and a copy will be placed on file in the BYU office.

NOTE: Plan ahead to take the exam. It takes a couple of weeks for the exam to arrive in our office and then another week to set-up a date and time to take your exam. The hours available for testing are Monday – Thursday 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-12pm. We will not be holding any exams at 11am on Tuesday or Thursday because of assembly and University Worship.
