State Authorization
State Authorization is a term that refers to an essential process that institutions of higher education conduct to obtain state and federal approval to offer instruction or educational activities in other states. Educational activities include online programs or courses, teaching, internships, or field trips. It is important to note that not all institutions of higher learning are officially able to offer “educational activities” in all states.
La Sierra University is in the process of seeking authorization in various states and has already obtained a few approvals.

Professional Licensure
Professional Licensure or “Licensure” means a process by which a state or other governmental entity establishes standards of practice. It gives legal permission to practice a profession by providing licenses to individuals who meet those standards (SARA Manual • Version 20.1. January 1, 2020, Distributed February 6, 2020).
For students enrolling in programs leading to a license on or after July 1, 2024 - The institution must satisfy applicable educational requirements for a license in the State where the Institution is Located AND where the Student is Located at the time of initial enrollment or the State where the student attests they intend to seek employment. 34 CFR 668.14(b)(32)(ii) effective July 1, 2024.
Professional licensure and certification requirements may vary by State or territory. Some states may have additional licensure or certification requirements such as professional examinations, background checks, years of work experience, fingerprinting, etc. La Sierra University cannot guarantee that students will obtain licensure or certification.
