Why Study Computer Science?

It is an exciting time to be a computer scientist because we are living in the midst of an information revolution that is powered by computers. Computers are central to the medical field, scientific research and exploration, finance, education, information storage and retrieval, communication, bioinformatics, computer graphics and animation, networking and web access, entertainment, and many others. Computers have indeed changed the way we live, and will continue to propel our economy forward through innovation.

Computer science is about teaching machines to solve complex and challenging problems to make our lives easier and more rewarding, to help us in our daily work, to quest for new knowledge, and to entertain us. Computer science students study the design, development and analysis of software and hardware systems to provide solutions to these problems. Computers on their own cannot think and are not capable of doing anything, but computer scientists are logical thinkers. So it is up to us as computer scientists, to write programs using the most efficient algorithm to teach these dumb machines how to solve the problems and to perform the different operations. Because computers solve problems to serve people, there is also a significant human side to computer science as well.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of computer scientists will grow much faster than other occupations in coming years. A large number of new jobs will be created in this field as Internet technologies and computer networks expand and continue to evolve, businesses’ technology needs become more complex, and the high demand for new mobile applications. According to recent reports by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for computer scientists fresh out of college is around $70K.
