Gen Ed Requirements The OLD Gen Ed

The requirements in the box below describe the General Education requirements for students under Bulletin years 2023-24 and earlier.

If you're a new student in Fall 2024 or after, please see the link "The NEW Gen Ed."

Foundational Studies courses address skills essential for college and professional success, and introduce concepts that will be developed in University Studies Theme and Breadth courses.

Students should complete their Foundational Studies as early as possible in their University career.

Freshman Seminar: (3 quarter units)
UNST 101A, B, C
Rhetoric (8-13 quarter units)
Three consecutive quarters (or two consecutive semesters) of College Writing ENGL 111, 112, 113
or
Freshman Seminar in Writing (for qualified students ENGL 124
Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning (4 quarter units)
One of the following college math courses: MATH 108, MATH 115, MATH 121, MATH 155, CPTG 117, DATA 115
World Languages (4-12 quarter units)
Three consecutive quarters of college language through: LANG 153
or
appropriate score on language placement exam
Health and Fitness (2 quarter units)
Lifetime Fitness HLSC 120

University Studies courses include inter-disciplinary Theme courses, as well as Breadth courses from a variety of disciplines.

Students’ transfer credits may reduce General Education requirements:

Freshman: a first-year student who transfers at least 24 units may waive UNST 101 (First Year Seminar).

Sophomore: a transfer student who qualifies, at minimum, for sophomore standing (44 units) and has completed at least 12 units of qualifying humanities credits may waive the Theme II HUMN interdisciplinary course requirement.

Junior/Senior: a transfer student who qualifies, at minimum, for junior standing (88 units) or Senior standing (136 units) and has completed at least 8 units of qualifying social science credits may waive the Theme I SSCI Interdisciplinary course requirement. Junior transfer students must complete two Service Learning requirements; senior transfer students must complete one Service Learning requirement. Junior/Senior transfer students must also complete either RLGN 304 and 4 units from Theme IIIC OR RLGN 305, 4 units from IIIC and 4 units from IIIB.
