Which Gen Ed Applies to Me?

If you are a new student (1st-year or transfer) at La Sierra in Fall 2024 or after, you'll complete "The NEW Gen Ed." The requirements are listed on the following pages.

If you're a continuing student (that is, you started your education at La Sierra prior to Fall 2024), see the link "The OLD Gen Ed."

FAQs What if I have questions?

To all incoming students, both new students and transfers, entering La Sierra in Fall 2024 and after.

Yes; Theme Courses can count toward Gen Ed requirements, or as electives, for students under the NEW Gen Ed.

Theme Courses are a required element of the OLD Gen Ed; they begin with the course prefixes:

  • SSCI
  • HUMN
  • RLGN
  • NSCI

The Course Cluster is 12 units of Gen Ed requirements reserved for classes related to the topic of human identity and its impact on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Not necessarily. Some majors have one or more IDEI courses required. Additionally, many of the courses meeting requirements in Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, and Religion are also designated as meeting IDEI requirements. Such courses are marked “(IDEI)” in the lists of courses in the Undergraduate Bulletin (2024-25 edition).

Double dipping is counting a course as meeting both a Gen Ed requirement and a requirement in your major. Under the previous Gen Ed program, students could double-dip just one course. With the new Gen Ed, multiple courses can count to both the major and Gen Ed.
