The La Sierra Advantage
When you study history, politics and sociology at La Sierra University, you will:
- Learn primarily in small classes where you can interact with professors and fellow students. They’ll know you by name.
- Take classes from professors with doctorates in their field, not from teaching assistants.
- Have a faculty adviser who will guide you in selecting the right courses for your degree.
- Do a senior research project with a faculty mentor. This one-to-one guidance will help prepare you for graduate studies, if that is your goal.

History, Politics & Sociology Undergraduate Programs
History Bachelor of Arts
A major in history is recommended for students who wish to prepare for secondary teaching, graduate study preparatory to college teaching, or the study of law and for students who seek a broad background in the liberal arts. The recommendations of the department adviser assist the student in selecting a program pattern that meets individual objectives. Students planning to attend graduate school are urged to develop foreign language competence. Most historians are college teachers who not only lecture, but also write and take part in research.
Sociology Bachelor of Arts
Sociology explores how people relate in groups. Majors in this field study family relationships, race and gender issues, poverty and social class, and other aspects of the human experience. Career possibilities for sociology majors include social services, teaching, health care, administration of justice, nonprofit organizations, and others where a keen understanding of how people relate to others is important.
La Sierra’s History professors encouraged me to explore my interests in their department even though I wasn’t a History major, and the classes I took ultimately inspired me to become a History major and go to law school. I had amazing support from my professors, who improved my reading and analysis skills, gave me detailed feedback on research and writing, and exposed me to information that broadened my world view. All of these things played a huge part in my getting accepted to law school, and are tools I use everyday now that I am here.

Global Studies Bachelor of Arts
Global studies students learn about particular cultures and how larger trends and issues affect people worldwide. They explore geography, economics, political science, anthropology, and other subjects as they learn to think and relate globally. Graduates often choose careers as missionaries, international aid workers, foreign service and diplomatic staff members, inner city program workers, and other employment where understanding cultures is important. Sometimes graduate study in law, business, public health, education, or international relations is key to career preparation.
Social Science: Secondary Teaching Bachelor of Arts
The Social Science major prepares students to become Secondary level teachers in History, Political Science, and Government. It provides the necessary knowledge in these areas to excel as Social Science instructors. With a BA in Social Studies, students can complete teaching credential coursework, student teaching, and history & social studies courses in four years.
As a sociology major at La Sierra University, I had the opportunity to study about various groups from all around the world, how governmental policies shape societal norms, and how culture shapes the ways communities interact. La Sierra University also provided me the chance to have interactive learning experiences as a research assistant working with the Iraqi Refugee community in Southern California and an international internship working with vulnerable communities in Sarnath, Varanasi, India.
