Biography

Rong-Huey Liu, Taiwanese-American, is one of Southern California’s most active oboists, currently serving principal positions in the Fresno Philharmonic, Long Beach Symphony, Reno Chamber Orchestra and Riverside County Philharmonic.

Praised by Press Enterprise “… a phenomenal oboist” and by Reno Tahoe Blog “Her performance was captivating…,” a versatile musician, Rong-Huey has been invited to perform as a chamber soloist at the Sundays’ Live, Grand Performance, Ojai Summer Music Festival, Bruman Chamber Music Summer Festival, Cactus Pear Music Festival, Nevada Chamber Music Festival summer concerts, Chamber Music Unbound and Southwest Music Festival/International New Music Festival and is also a teaching artist at the Cactus Pear Music Festival and Fresno Opera and Orchestra Summer Academy.  She will also be the principal oboist in the inaugural season of the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico Festival. 

Rong-Huey has performed concertos by Bach, Handel, Kalliwoda, Marcello, Mozart, Corigliano and is the featured soloist in the world premier of Dr. Walter Saul’s Kiev 2014: Rhapsody for Oboe and Orchestra which was praised by Fresno Bee at its World Premiere concert review that “Rong-Huey Liu, whose work on the oboe was sublime. Liu offered a crisp performance, technically adept but also filled with a quiet perseverance and passion.  She was wonderful.” Rong-Huey recorded Kiev 2014 composition under the Naxos with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine under the direction of maestro Kuchar. Her most recent solo engagement includes the US premiere of Ferrer Ferran’s El Bosque Mágico oboe concerto with the CSUF Symphonic Winds! 

As a Hollywood studio musician, Rong-Huey has recorded with celebrities such as Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Chris Botti, David Benoit, Ron Isley, and several movie sound tracks including oboe solo specifically written for Julia Roberts in the “Fireflies in the Garden.”

Rong-Huey has won first place in organizations such as the Harvard Musical Association, the Taichung Regional Oboe Competition and the Taiwan National Oboe Competition, and performance awards from the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwanese College Music competition, Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts in Boston, and Spotlight Awards from Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. 

Rong-Huey earned Bachelor and Master in Music degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California with award from Phi Beta Kappa and a membership of Pi Kappa Lambda.  Among her teachers are Rong-Yi Liu, Joseph Robinson and David Weiss.  Rong-Huey is currently the oboe professor at California State University Fullerton School of Music, California State University of Los Angeles, La Sierra University and Riverside City College.
