VA Education Chapters Explanation of Benefits

  1. CHAPTER 33 – Post 9/11 GI Bill®
    An educational assistance program for veterans and service members with active duty service after September 10, 2001. This program includes payments for tuition and fees, housing, books, and supplies.
  2. CHAPTER 33 with YELLOW RIBBON
    The Yellow Ribbon program supplements the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. This program funds tuition and fees once the  maximum benefits have been exceeded.
  3. CHAPTER 35 – Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program
    This educational benefits program provides benefits to the spouse and children of veterans who have lost their lives during service or have a total and permanent service-connected disability. 
  4. CHAPTER 31- Veteran Readiness and Employment
    (formerly entitled Vocational and Rehabilitation and Employment) Veterans with service-connected disabilities. This program provides help to prepare for, obtain, and maintain suitable jobs.
  5. CHAPTER 30 – Montgomery GI Bill® (Active Duty)
    Educational benefits for eligible veterans and service members who have served for at least two years.
  6. CHAPTER 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill® (Selected Reserve)
    Educational benefits for members of the selected reserve who meet certain requirements.

Title 38 USC 3679(e) School Compliance Policy on Allowing Veterans to Attend or Participate in Courses Pending VA Payment

NOTE: A Covered Individual is any individual who is entitled to educational assistance under Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, Chapter 33, Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits, and Chapter 30, the Montgomery bill.  GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.

La Sierra University permits any covered individual to attend or participate in the course of education during the period beginning on the date on which the individual provides to the educational institution a certificate of eligibility for entitlement to educational assistance under chapter 31 or 33 (a “certificate of eligibility” can also include a “Statement of Benefits” obtained from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) website – eBenefits, or a VAF 28-1905 form for chapter 31 authorization purposes) and ending on the earlier of the following dates:

  1. The date on which payment from VA is made to the institution.
  2. 90 days after the date the institution certified tuition and fees following the receipt of the certificate of eligibility.

La Sierra University will not impose any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered individual because of the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the institution due to the delayed disbursement funding from VA under chapter 31 or 33.
