BYU FLATS Information & Registration
La Sierra University is pleased to announce Zoom Proctoring for BYU FLATS exams.
- Please follow all instructions below to purchase the exam through BYU.
- When selecting your proctor with BYU they will guide you to autofill the proctor information with an approved virtual proctoring service
- Note all proctor fees and scheduling will be handled through BYU's approved proctor services. This is still a great option for students who are unable to test with us in person and would prefer to test from home. Please note that the $200 Records Processing Fee is still required, that can be paid directly through the Bursar's Office, (Administration Building #107).
What is BYU FLATS?
The Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services program through Brigham Young University provides credit for over 50 languages.
Students who have acquired a certain level of competency can receive credit for language skill achieved.
Students wishing to attempt testing out of their world language requirement must first purchase the exam from BYU.
To verify that the language in which you wish to test is available, check the BYU FLATS approved listing.
Before Your Test
On Your Test Day Have The Following:
- Driver's license or state-issued ID card, current passport, or military ID.
- Card only to pay the fee (if not already paid).
- Directions to the Testing Center
How Do I Register?
To verify that the language in which you wish to test is available, visit flats.byu.edu
You may purchase the exam using the BYU online registration form , proctoring information needed to complete the form can be found at the bottom of this page.
- Total Cost of Exam is $300 (all fees are non-refundable)
- BYU requires a $50 fee* per test that must be paid during your registration process.
- Some tests may cost $75.
- La Sierra Testing Center proctoring fee $50 due at the time of your exam appointment
- La Sierra equivalency exam recording fee is $200 due at the time of your exam appointment. (BYU does not issue credit for passing the exam, this fee will allow us to generate a transcript for you.)

Test Format
Most tests are computer based and will have a listening, reading, and grammar component.
In addition most tests are multiple choice format. Students are allowed two and half hours to complete the test. Please keep this in mind when scheduling.Results
This test grants credits ranging from WDLG 151 to WDLG 201. Depending on your performance the Records office will grant you credits at the highest of 8 units. Your unofficial results will be emailed to you following the completion of your exam. Official results will be mailed within 6-8 weeks from BYU to Records. A copy will also be sent to you and will be placed on file in the BYU office.
