La Sierra University offers several options for English Proficiency exams:

• Michigan EPT
• iTEP
• TOEFL-ITP

These exams are used to assess English language learners and place them in the appropriate program and classes. These exams are usually held at the beginning and end of each quarter. For more information about scheduling, please contact testing@lasierra.edu.

Additional tests such as DuoLingo and IELTS are accepted, please contact your enrollment counselor for more information.

The Michigan English Placement Test (or Michigan EPT) is a computer-based exam designed to quickly and reliably place ESL students into homogeneous ability levels. It provides an accurate assessment of a test taker’s general receptive language proficiency by reliably measuring performance in the following key skill areas:

• listening comprehension
• grammatical knowledge
• vocabulary range
• reading comprehension

The TOEFL-ITP exam is used to assess English-language skills for international students to determine placement in the correct program. The exam assesses proficiency in three different skills; reading comprehension, listening, comprehension, and structure and written expression. TOEFL-ITP exams are institution-based only and can only be used by the administering school. In order to obtain scores for other universities you must take the TOEFL ITP exam.
