Language Equivalency Exams
La Sierra students seeking a 4-year degree under bulletin's prior to 2024-2025 bulletin must satisfy the university foreign language requirement of demonstrating competency in a modern language through one of the following:
- Completing coursework through the WDLG level 153 or higher
- Transfer Coursework at a level equivalent to or higher than La Sierra's WDLG 153
- Completing at least three consecutive quarters or two semesters of Greek, Hebrew, or American Sign Language
- Completing one quarter abroad through the University's ACA program
- Achieving an appropriate score on an approved language placement exam
Currently La Sierra has approved tests from the following vendors:
- BYU Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services- BYU FLATS
- College Level Exam Preparation- CLEP
- NYU Language Proficiency Exam
Please follow the following steps for all language exams:
- Verify using the table below that the language you want is available
- Purchase the exam through the appropriate testing agency
- Information needed to fill out the exam information can be found in the Proctor Information tab

Important Test Proctoring Information
Exam | Description | Cost | Languages |
BYU FLATS Exam | BYU FLATS provides credit for over 50 languages. Consisting of roughly 150 questions, students have 2 and a half hours to complete the exam. Students receive unofficial results immediately upon completion of the exam. Currently only available virtually. | Exam-$50 Proctoring $50 Records Fee $200 Total-$300 | |
CLEP Exam | CLEP provides language equivalency for Spanish, French, and German. Students have 90 minutes for most exams and receive unofficial results following the exam. Currently available in person at La Sierra or virtually through CLEP. | Exam- $95 for most Proctoring $30 -at home (Remote proctoring service approved by CLEP through third party) $50- in-person Total- $125-$145 | |
NYU Language Exams (Paper) | NYU offers test equivalency in many hard to find languages through its 12 point exam. Students can take an online test for most languages, but must request a paper exam to be proctored by La Sierra for certain exams. | Exam- $479-$529 + $20 processing fee Proctoring- $50 La Sierra-paper only Total- Varies per exam | |
NYU Language Exams (Online) | NYU offers test equivalency in many hard to find languages through its 12 point exam. Students can take an online test for most languages, but must request a paper exam to be proctored by La Sierra for certain exams. | Exam- $479-$529 + $20 processing fee $7 each additional hour for NYU online proctoring Total- Varies per exam | NYU online exams |
