Modern cities are vibrant, living systems where plants, animals and humans live side-by-side. Explore the interplay between natural processes and human systems through outdoor research, labs and scientific analysis. Upon completion of this course students will have foundational skills in field research, including data collection, water and soil testing, and microscope use.

Nematode worms are everywhere! They live in soil, mulch, around plants, and they hitch rides on millipedes, slugs, snails, and other soil community organisms. In this course we'll learn all about nematodes as we isolate them from our campus environment, learn microbial techniques in the laboratory, and even sequence their DNA to identify each species. Welcome!

Classes for Enrichment 1-4pm

Dive into the fascinating world of color through the lens of science and art! In this hands-on course, you'll explore how light, wavelengths, and perception shape the colors we see, and learn how color theory applies to everything from painting and design to digital media and technology. Through exciting experiments, creative projects, and real-world applications, you'll discover the science behind color and how it influences art, branding, and even accessibility. Whether you're a budding artist or a future tech innovator, this course will ignite your creativity and deepen your understanding of color in the world around you.

Biodiversity of Southern California

Have you ever been intrigued by one of our wild animal neighbors? Lizards, snakes, insects, and birds may seem commonplace to some and even frightening to others but each is part of its own intricate ecosystem with a story behind its fight for joy of sitting in our yards or slithering through our gardens. In this class a basic introduction will be given on the biodiversity of the wild and natural corners of southern California. A special focus will be given to the science of Herpetology with attention given to some of our most charismatic neighbors, lizards, snakes, frogs, and salamanders. Class will be held in La Sierra University Herpetology Lab where slide shows and demonstrations with live animals will take place as well as many opportunities to get outside and search for these creatures in the wild.

Student Capacity: 12

Learn how to make a self-autonomous, object-avoidance robot with lights and sound. At the end of the course keep the robot you make!
