Changing the World

Through Inquiry

Jonathon Payne is a young man with a big ambition - to play a part in finding a cure for leukemia, a disease that kills more than 300,000 people worldwide each year. A senior biochemistry major and South Hall resident assistant, Jon has spent the past two summers doing research on leukemia at Penn State Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Jon is continuing the research in his Honors project. After graduation he plans to enter an M.D./Ph.D. program. Ultimately he wants to have his own research lab in a biomedical setting. "I love research", he says, "because you get to discover things no one has ever seen."

Through Causes

Kate Case, Senior Global Studies/Political Science major, spent last year in Washington, DC at the International Justice Mission. She recently interned with California Against Slavery, working in support of the November ballot proposition. Kate is planning a La Sierra Lobby Day to lobby our state leaders on anti-human trafficking bills.

Through Community

Joshua Zonker is one of two La Sierra University students named 2012 Scholar Athletes of the Year by the National Asociation of Intercollegiate Athletics. Already working as a teacher at Cross Roads High School, Josh is also pursuing a Masters in Teaching from the School of Education. Outside the classroom, Josh is captain of the Men’s Golden Eagles basketball team.

Through Service

Alejandra Najarro, Junior Nursing major, served in Peru as part of a nursing labor and delivery team...and she delivered four babies! She used her personal funds to ensure that the clinic had medicines for critical patients and was the only missionary or doctor on site for several weeks when others had to leave.

Through Mission

Sterling Spence, Senior Religious Studies/Business Management major, is one of nine students to receive the La Sierra University Presidential Scholarship. He is a student leader, musician, and former student missionary. Recently Sterling co-led a youth team that ministered to children in the Marshall Islands. He says the goal for the team’s work was that members get a tangible taste of what it means to live out the words of Jesus in Matthew 25.
