Why Study Computer Science?

It is an exciting time to be a computer scientist because we are living in the midst of an information revolution that is powered by computers. Computers are central to the medical field, scientific research and exploration, entertainment, film and animation, business, education, and the list goes on. Computers have indeed changed the way we live, and will continue to propel our economy forward through innovation.

Computer science is about teaching machines to solve problems in order to make our lives easier and more rewarding, to help us in our daily work, to quest for new knowledge, and to entertain us. Computer science students study the design and development of software and hardware systems to provide solutions to these problems. Computers on their own cannot think and are not capable of doing anything, but computer scientists are logical thinkers. So it is up to us as computer scientists, to write programs using the most efficient algorithms to teach these brainless machines how to solve the problems. Because computers solve problems to serve people, there is also a significant human side to computer science as well.

The U.S. Department of Labor projects that employment of computer scientists will grow much faster than many other occupations in the coming decade. A large number of new jobs will be created in this field as Internet technologies and computer networks continue to evolve, business technology needs become more complex, and the high demand for new mobile applications expand. According to recent reports, the average annual salary for computer scientists fresh out of college is around $70K. One of our recent graduates was hired immediately on graduation by Northrop Grumman with a starting pay of $82K!

Computer Science Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree is a four-year program that prepares students to work and face the challenges in today's world of technology. Students in the Computer Science program at La Sierra University will begin by taking a set of fundamental core computer science courses. Students can then choose to focus in one or more career paths that they are interested in. To gain a good knowledge in a particular career path, courses recommended for that career path should be taken. Any one of these career paths are popular subareas in computer science, and are highly sought after in the job market.

The Computer Science B.S. program can also be taken as a career path:

  • Computer Engineering and Embedded Systems
  • Software Engineering
  • Information Systems
  • Web and Mobile Applications
  • Network and Cyber Security
  • Bioinformatics
  • Graduate Study
