College Writing Program

About the College Writing Program

The College Writing course sequence fulfills the general education requirements for freshman rhetoric. Students must earn a minimum grade of C or higher in each course to be permitted to go on to the next course in the sequence.

The courses in the sequence include: ENGL111A: College Writing I or ENGL111B: College I Plus, ENGL112A: College Writing II or ENGL112B: College Writing II Plus, and ENGL113: College Writing III. Students must complete the whole sequence unless they have transfer credit for some or all of the required courses or if they qualify for ENGL124: Freshman Seminar in Writing.

College Writing courses focus on the writing process, understanding the rhetorical situation, and utilizing genre conventions and forms. An emphasis on strong organization, clear thesis statements, strong development, and knowledge of APA conventions is taught throughout the three courses of the sequence.

Students entering the College Writing Program may select between two course options depending on their level of skill and confidence.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the College Writing course sequence, students should be able to:

  • Possess an awareness of the conventions of academic research processes, documentation, and linguistic structures through practice composing and revising
  • Demonstrate the ability to locate, evaluate, and synthesize source material by producing a substantial research project
