Award-winning composer to lead seven-school band concert
The 2013 Academy Band Festival concert will be held at the La Sierra University Church Sat., Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. and will cap a three-day clinic for high school students directed by Andrew Boysen, Jr. A University of New Hampshire music professor and wind symphony director, Boysen is also an accomplished composer of concert band music who penned a work titled “October Dance” for the festival. Concert admission is free.
Students from seven Seventh-day Adventist academies from Monterey to San Diego traveled to La Sierra University this week to attend the festival beginning on Oct. 16. Participating schools are Glendale Adventist Academy, La Sierra Academy, Loma Linda Academy, Monterey Bay Academy, Newbury Park Adventist Academy, San Diego Academy, and San Fernando Valley Academy. La Sierra University is a Seventh-day Adventist institution.
The festival concert finale will also include Boysen's work, “In the Beginning,” “Second Movement, Symphony No. 6” by Vincent Persichetti, “Lauda” by Timothy Miles, “Three Chorale Preludes” by William Latham, and “Chorale and Alleluia” by Howard Hanson.
Under Boysen's leadership, the UNH wind symphony has released six recordings and been invited to perform at regional conventions of the College Band Directors National Association and National Association for Music Education.
As a guest conductor and clinician, Boysen appears with high school, university and festival ensembles across the United States, Great Britain, and Australia. He also receives composition commissions from festival, university, and high school concert bands around the U.S. His composition awards include the International Horn Society Composition Contest in 2000.
Boysen has several published works with the Neil A. Kjos Music Company, and other publishers, including pieces for band, orchestra, clarinet and piano, and brass choir. Recordings of his music appear on the Sony, R-Kal, Mark, St. Olaf and Elf labels.
