Award-winning vocalist comes to Pierce Street Jazz

 

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Mon David, award-winning jazz vocalist, will headline the next Pierce Street Jazz concert at La Sierra University.

On Wed., Dec. 14 at 7 p.m., David will bring his talent and expertise to the stage accompanied by Pierce Street Jazz regulars Henry “the Skipper” Franklin on bass, Theo Saunders on piano, and Ramon Banda on drums. The performance will take place at the Troesh Conference Center in the Zapara School of Business.

According to JazzTimes, David has studied Ella Fitzgerald, Louie Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Mark Murphy, Jon Hendricks and various vocal groups such as Manhattan Transfer. A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Music, he is also a composer, arranger, poet and visual artist. In 2006 he won the London International Jazz Vocal Competition and has recorded with UK-based Candid label. One of his latest endeavors includes the album, “This is All I Ask.”

David has made appearances at top jazz festivals and clubs and has performed with such luminaries as David Benoit, Eric Marienthal, Tina May, Lee Gibson, Bobby Enriquez, Boney James, and Peter White.

Franklin has organized the Pierce Street Jazz concerts at La Sierra University since their inception as a summer jazz series in 2009. His broad experience includes recordings on more than 150 albums and compact discs including gold releases, many of which he produced. Banda performed for 24 years with the Grammy award-winning Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band. Saunders has numerous compositions to his credit and original scores for theatre, radio, and multimedia production.

Franklin recently released his latest album titled “High Voltage,” and Saunders released a new album titled “Jazz Assemblage: Theo Saunders Sextet” which includes work by Franklin. Saunders also works with saxophonist Azar Lawrence.
