Brass Bash to hit La Sierra stage

The sound of trumpet, piccolo trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn and euphonium will fill Hole Memorial Auditorium in Riverside this Saturday night, in a musical extravaganza of brass performance.

The Brass Bash Recital will take place at the auditorium at La Sierra University, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. The performance will feature La Sierra adjunct trumpet professor Giovanni Santos, La Sierra adjunct music professor and trombonist David Kendall, and the La Sierra University Brass Quintet.

The program features works by Johann Neruda, Tommaso Albinoni, Leonard Bernstein and Ernest Sachse. General admission is $10, senior citizens, $5, and family admission, $20. Santos, a La Sierra alum and director of bands at Loma Linda Academy has appeared as a solo trumpet performer on television and feature film scores and has played nationwide as a soloist and chamber musician. Santos delivered a solo performance for the 2010 Park City Film Festival Jury Choice for Best Impact in a Musical Score, “Actually, Adieu My Love” by Jay Kim. He has performed as principal trumpet under noted conductors and composers including Carl St. Clair, conductor of the Pacific Symphony in Santa Ana, and composer Frank Ticheli whose works have been performed by such groups as the Atlanta, Detroit and Dallas symphonies. Santos also conducts band festivals and clinics around the United States. He earned his Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.

Kendall, also a music lecturer at the University of California, Riverside, is a brass instructor at Loma Linda Academy and director of music ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Riverside. He is also music director for the Amory Band, a Civil War reenactment ensemble that plays period instruments and repertoire for Civil War events as well as for television and film.

Kendall is a graduate of La Sierra University. He specializes in liturgical music of the Spanish Colonial Philippines and travels to the Philippines often to present and conduct his musical research.
