Gallery’s first juried student exhibit to award young artists

In all, 32 students will exhibit a wide range of art works this coming week during La Sierra University's annual student show at Brandstater Gallery. But unlike previous years' young exhibitors, the fledgling artists in this group have brushed up against the professional arts world by submitting their creative works to the scrutiny of three arbiters in the university's first juried show.

Brandstater Gallery will hold an opening reception and awards ceremony Monday, April 12, 6-8 p.m. and will present winners of the juried competition with checks and certificates. The student exhibit will be on display through April 29. Gallery hours are Mon.-Thurs., 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sun., 2 - 5 p.m. The awarded pieces will be designated with ribbons in the gallery.

The juried award categories are: Best of Show, $300; two first prizes, $200 each for fine arts and graphic design; two second prizes, $100 each for fine arts and graphic design; four honorable mention awards, $50 each. The Brandstater Gallery is funded to provide the juried arts prizes.

Three jurors judged the students' entries: Daniel Foster, chief executive officer of the Community Foundation Serving Riverside and San Bernardino Counties and former director of the Riverside Art Museum; Hollywood film and animation matte artist Justin Brandstater; and graphic artist Dana Herkelrath, former faculty member at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design.

In previous years, art faculty selected students' work for display in the annul spring exhibit. “This is the first time the students have submitted work themselves,” said art department Chair Beatriz Mejia-Krumbein. “It's a learning experience about the real life of an artist and how to submit artwork to a gallery,” she said.
