Hanson-Koobs series to feature faculty, award-winning alum

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – La Sierra University’s Hanson-Koobs Chamber Music Series will start off the new year with a performance that features the talents of several music faculty members and an award-winning alum.

La Sierra University music alum Alexander Knecht will play viola with music department faculty members in the Hanson-Koobs Chamber Music Series concert on Jan. 13.

The concert will be held Sunday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. and will showcase Lee Zimmer, guitar, Ken Aiso, violin, Pin Fei Tang, cello, Irene Chen, piano, Marek Szpakiewicz, cello, Elvin Rodriguez, piano, Jason Uyeyama, violin, and La Sierra music department alum and Juilliard School graduate, violist Alexander Knecht.

The ensemble will perform Luigi Boccherini’s “Quintet No. 4 in D Major for Guitar and Strings, ‘Fandango,’” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sonata for Piano and Violin in E Minor KV 304,” Astor Piazzolla’s “Cafe 1930’ from Histoire du Tango,” and Robert Schumann’s “Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47.”

Knecht, a 2013 graduate of both La Sierra’s music and mathematics programs, earned a master’s degree in viola performance from the famed Juilliard School in New York City. He recently completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree on full scholarship at the USC Thornton School of Music. Knecht is a member of the viola section of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and previously served as second violin with the Debut Chamber Orchestra.

Knecht is a previous winner in the 2013 Redlands Bowl Young Artists competition and is a winner of the La Sierra University annual concerto competition. He is an educator with a thriving private instruction practice, and through the CKC-Music community engagement program in San Bernardino he mentors youth in playing stringed instruments.

The performing faculty members hold various positions within the music department and possess extensive backgrounds as soloists and musicians with some of classical music’s most celebrated groups.
