Jazz vocalist Trible to lead Pierce Street concert

Dynamic vocalist Dwight Trible will lead the next Pierce Street Jazz concert this week, putting on display his musicianship and improvisational skill.

The Dwight Trible Quartet will perform Wed., Feb. 1 at 7 p.m., at the La Sierra University Alumni Center, 11500 Pierce St., Riverside. Admission is free. Additional information is available at 951-785-2148.

The quartet of top music industry talent will consist of Trible on vocals, Theo Saunders on piano, Carl Burnett on drums and Henry “the Skipper” Franklin on bass.

The quartet is a powerhouse of jazz talent and experience. Trible performs with his own group, the Dwight Trible Ensemble, and is the vocalist with the Pharoah Sanders Quartet. He also serves as the vocal director for the Horace Tapscott Pan Afrikan Peoples' Arkestra.

Trible has worked with a long list of notables, his biography states, including Kenny Burrell, Kenny Garrett, Harry Belafonte, Della Reese and Norman Conners, as well as contemporary soul artists like D.J. Rogers and L.A. Reid, a Grammy winner and chairman and chief executive officer of Epic Records. Trible has collaborated with Horace Tapscott, Billy Higgins, Kamau Daaood and others.

Trible's recordings include “Duality” and Cosmic,” both released last year. His recognitions include nomination in 2004 of his album “Living Water” by BBC Radio One for a Worldwide Album of the Year award, his biography states.

Franklin's extensive musical background includes performances on more than 150 albums and compact discs including gold releases, many of which he produced. In March he released his 24th album, “Soul of the World,” recorded with his band on his SP Records lable. His band's 2009 album, “Home Cookin',” features the renowned Barbara Morrison on vocals. The project received airplay on KJAZZ 88.1 FM.

Franklin has played his upright bass with numerous jazz and pop greats including Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Count Basie, Freddie Hubbard and Milt Jackson, and was part of the legendary Hugh Masekela's band during the late 1960s. When not on tour in various parts of the United States and the world, Franklin performs at The Historic Mission Inn in Riverside, Calif.

Saunders has performed in many of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals and concert halls with distinguished artists including Hubbard, Carla Bley, David “Fathead” Newman, Barbara Morrison, Charles Lloyd, Claudio Roditi, Victor Brasil, Raul De Souza, Bobby Rodriguez, Gladys Knight, the Four Tops and many others.

He has directed music for opera productions and international musical theatre. As a composer, Saunders has numerous compositions to his credit as well as original scores for theatre, radio and multimedia production. Artists Franklin, Ray Armando, Benn Clatworthy, Bobby Matos, and Bruce Paulson have recorded his compositions.

Drummer Burnett has backed a roster of top artists including Sarah Vaughn, Freddie Hubbard, Marvin Gaye and others and has recorded with famous acts such as Horace Silver, Art Pepper and Kenny Burrell. He studied music with Sam Browne at Jefferson High School, former teacher of famed saxophonist Dexter Gordon, and jumped into a long-running career as a well-known West Coast musician. His collaborations include work with Stanley Gilbert, the Gene Harris Trio, and the Friends of Distinction.
