The La Sierra University Symphony Orchestra heads into its season with a full program and a new conductor.

The orchestra will begin its lineup this year with a concert on Nov. 12, 7 p.m., at La Sierra University's Hole Memorial Auditorium. Under the direction of Maestro John Carter, the group will perform a slate of classical greats-- Béla Bartók's “Rumanian Folk Dances,” Edvard Grieg's “Holberg Suite,” and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's “Symphony No. 5.”

Admission is free. Additional information is at 951-785-2036. The university is located at 4500 Riverwalk Parkway, Riverside.

The event will serve as Carter's conducting debut this season and signals his return to La Sierra's stage. He previously directed the orchestra between 2005-2007. A La Sierra alum, Carter has returned to his alma mater to serve as its new director of orchestral studies. In addition to leading the orchestra, he teaches courses in orchestration and piano proficiency and offers private instruction in conducting.

Carter arrives from Portland, Ore. where he conducted several groups including the Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, the Jewish Community Orchestra, the Portland Adventist String Orchestra, the Advent Trombone Choir, the Sunnyside Brass Ensemble, and annual musical premieres through Trueheart Productions. He also taught undergraduate courses in conducting and orchestration at Marylhurst University near Portland, and served as interim conductor in 2008 at Lewis and Clark College. He is an active arranger and has had several dozen works performed by a variety of ensembles.

Carter graduated from La Sierra University in 2000. He completed graduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles while conducting La Sierra's orchestra in 2005-07. During this time he formed several ensembles, including a student orchestra at Loma Linda University, and conducted the Loma Linda Academy Annual String Music Festivals in 2005 and 2006.<br/><br/>
