Allan Villamor, Brandon Reid, Yonghe Li, Jeharli Jimenez, Harine Park, and Sunny Zhou, were each awarded $2,500 in Edison STEM Scholars for a total $15,000 from the energy conglomerate.

Edison STEM Scholars must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in a STEM major, show financial need, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. They also must remain a full-time equivalent student at La Sierra University during the scholarship period, and must make a classroom presentation to STEM peers and faculty.

“We are pleased to be able to continue to provide students scholarships provided by Edison International to inspire students to excel in STEM disciplines and be part of the future solutions for society,” said Marvin Payne, director of Title V programs and associate biochemistry professor. “These scholarships have had a real impact on the recipients of the scholarships and other students.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for computer and information research scientists are expected to increase 21% between 2021 – 2031, much faster than average. Jobs for chemists and material scientists are expected to grow 6% during the same time period.

La Sierra University has been awarded a total of $135,000 since the 2014-15 school year from Edison International’s STEM Scholars program for supporting students’ career interests in science, technology, engineering and math. Scholarship funds are essential to students’ abilities to pursue their studies and future careers.
