La Sierra University Events for December 2010

 

There's a lot happening over the next couple of weeks at La Sierra as the university celebrates Christmas and offers great music, art and theatrical events to the campus and community.

La Sierra University's annual Christmas Tree Lighting, Wed., Dec. 1, at 5 p.m. on the campus mall in front of the Administration Building. The event will include a petting zoo from 5 - 7 p.m. for children, special music, a carol sing-off, hot chili, cornbread and drink for everyone with cookies generously supplied by La Sierra University Church. The carol sing-off is open to groups who wish to participate. Sign up at La Sierra's Student Life Office. Admission is free. Candlelight Concert at La Sierra University Church, Fri., Dec. 3, 7:30 p.m. A beautiful and long-standing holiday tradition, La Sierra University's Candlelight Concert will feature the university's chamber singers, chorale, orchestra, and brass quintet. The program includes a centerpiece performance of John Rutter's “Gloria” and solo performances by professors of guitar, flute, violin and voice. Free admission. La Sierra University Church is located at 4937 Sierra Vista Ave., Riverside. Call 951-785-2036 for more information.

La Sierra University's Stahl Center Créche Festival, at Sierra Vista Chapel, featuring dozens of nativity displays, or crèches from around the world. Free cookies and hot beverages will be provided. Free admission. The display will be open before and after La Sierra's annual Candlelight Concert which will be held at 7:30 p.m. in La Sierra University Church. The festival will be open Fri., Dec. 3, 6 - 7:30 p.m., and 9:30 - 10:30 p.m., and on Sat., Dec. 4, 2 - 5:30 p.m. Sierra Vista Chapel is located across from La Sierra University Church which is at 4937 Sierra Vista Ave., Riverside. Community members are invited to display their créches in the exhibit. Créche drop off, 12 - 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 3; créche pickup at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4. Fall Wind Ensemble Concert, Hole Memorial Auditorium, La Sierra University, Sat., Dec. 4, 7 p.m. The university's 40-member ensemble will perform Leonard Bernstein's “Overture to Candide,” Gary Gilroy's “Energetikos,” and “Autumn Soliloquy” by James Barnes. The program will feature a solo by La Sierra oboist Nancy Blaire. Free admission. Call 951-785-2036 for more information.

Fall Big Band Concert, Hole Memorial Auditorium, La Sierra University, Sat., Dec. 11, 7 p.m. Set your spirits soaring this holiday season with the university's acclaimed 20-member Big Band, performing “Take the 'A' Train,” “Georgia on My Mind,” and other classics. Free admission. Call 951-785-2036 for more information.

La Sierra UniversityDrama presents Improv! - La Sierra University's Department of English and Communication will present “Theater Sports: Whose Preposition/Adverb/Adjective is it Anyway?”—an evening of true love, laughter, tears, treachery, nobility and who knows what will happen next. “Hats Off,” a photographic exhibit in La Sierra University's Brandstater Gallery that features the collaborative works of photographers Amy Bystedt and Sally Egan. Curated by Andi Campognone, former exhibitions curator of the Riverside Art Museum. The show pays homage to icons of the photography industry with the artists playing both photographer and subject. The exhibit is on display through Dec. 9. Gallery hours are Mon. - Thurs., 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sun., 2 - 5 p.m. Admission is free.
