La Sierra University Orchestra commences season with pianist Mamora

 

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The La Sierra University Orchestra will launch its 2016-17 season with a night of legendary composers’ works, featuring the talent of pianist Jonathan Mamora, senior piano performance major.

The University Orchestra Concert will take place on Sat., Oct. 22 at 7 p.m., and will feature Dean Anderson, director of orchestra studies, as the conductor and Mamora on piano. They will perform Franz Schubert’s “Symphony No. 5” and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Concerto No. 1.”

The La Sierra University Orchestra consists of music majors, certificate program students, and other La Sierra students, high school students, and community members.

Mamora has studied piano for more than 16 years and is currently under the tutelage of Elvin Rodriguez, professor and chair of the Department of Music. He has also competed in regional and international competitions where he has received many awards such as second prize in the IIYM International Piano Competition, first prize in the Steinway Society of Riverside County Concerto Competition, first prize in the Music Teacher’s Association of California Concerto Competition, and more. He was the first place winner of La Sierra University’s 2013 Promising Young Artist Competition and won first place in the 2014 Marcia Specht-Guy Concerto Competition. He has worked with world renowned teachers and musicians such as Antonio Pompa-Baldi and Santiago Rodriguez. He is also a member of the Honors program at La Sierra.

Anderson has served as the music director for the Dana Point Symphony for over four seasons and is also artistic director for Symphony Irvine. He is also an orchestra clinician and has worked with various youth ensembles across the United States. As an opera conductor, he has performed with Opera UCLA and Fullerton College Opera. He also conducted the West Coast premiere of Daron Hagen’s “Little Nemo in Sumberland” with La Sierra’s opera program.

The University Orchestra Concert admission is $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors ages 55 and over, and $5 for students and teachers. Children age 12 and under are free. Concert season passes are also available. All proceeds from admission fees will go toward student scholarships and other projects in the music department.
