La Sierra University to Honor Pioneer Education Missionaries To Mexico On Path of the Just
The Kellys and Allreds are being honored for their work to establish Universidad Linda Vista, an education institution in Chiapis, Mexico.
Sponsored by La Sierra University's Stahl Center for World Service, the Path of the Just is a key feature of the campus's central pedestrian mall. It honors individuals whose lives of service have fostered human rights and religious tolerance. Granite boulders placed on the Path identify individuals including South African cleric and change agent Desmond Tutu, Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, India missionary Mother Theresa, author Pearl S. Buck, and Third Reich resister Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Boulders honoring the Kellys and Allreds will be unveiled at 11:45 am on the campus mall.
In December 1957, the pioneering educators worked together in southern Mexico, building the school's classrooms and dormitories from trees and boulders (converted to cement) found on the property. That three-week project stretched into nine years of service developing the school facilities. Only after student needs were cared for did the two couples build homes for themselves. Today Universidad Linda Vista has an enrollment of more than 400, and offers 18 undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees in business, education, physics, math, chemistry, biology, nutrition, nursing, computer systems, theology and music
Path of the Just events will begin at 9:30 am in the La Sierra University church, with a worship service and liturgy that will focus on the importance of world service, and the diversity that defines the La Sierra University learning community. Charles Teel, Professor of Religion and Society, and Stahl Center director, will present the homily. The church is located at 4937 Sierra Vista Avenue, Riverside, across the street from the La Sierra campus.
