Pierce Street Jazz showcases violinist Weinstein

He's a violinist and multi-talented instrumentalist who's played with a roster of bright stars including Ray Charles, Gerald Wilson and The Jacksons. On Jan. 28 Daniel Weinstein will showcase his talents for Pierce Street Jazz in Riverside.

Next Thursday, at 7 p.m., the Dan Weinstein Quartet will perform a free concert of finger-snapping jazz at La Sierra University's Alumni Center, home of La Sierra University's Pierce Street Jazz concerts.

Weinstein's quartet will include long-time music industry talents Joe Letteri on piano, Harold Mason on drums and Henry “the Skipper” Franklin on upright bass. The group has extensive experience on stage and in recording studios playing with some of music's hottest acts.

Los Angeles native Weinstein has pursued a broad musical career since 1973, doubling on violin, trombone, viola, tuba, euphonium and most recently cornet as well singing, composing, arranging and music copying.

He has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists including Teddy Edwards, Gerald Wilson, Buddy Collette, Jimmy Witherspoon, La Vern Baker, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Harry James Orchestra, Al Martino, Bobby Matos and Israel “Cachao” Lopez. He leads his own swing/blues and Latin jazz combos and has contributed to both motion picture and television soundtracks including “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Drumline,” “The Whole Nine Yards,” “Festival in Cannes,” “Robots,” “The Lost City,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “Hancock,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Camp Laszlo.”

Weinstein has also co-composed and arranged music for full orchestra for the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra in Culver City and the Drew Jazz Festival. He is currently a first-call member of over 20 musical groups in the styles of Latin jazz, salsa, western swing, swing, New Orleans traditional and second line, klezmer and modern Israeli and 1920's dance/novelty music.
