Renowned pianist to headline orchestra concert

 

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – James Dick, an internationally renowned concert pianist, will join the La Sierra University Orchestra in a concert at Hole Memorial Auditorium.

Dick and the university orchestra under direction of Dean Anderson will play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 23” and Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 104.” The performance will be held at 7 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 28.

Dick has performed with the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Symphony and more. He has served as a guest soloist for the Cleveland, Tokyo, Parisii, Ravel, Debussy and Cassatt quartets, and with such musicians and conductors as famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and James Levine. Dick has received numerous honors including the Texas Medal of Arts, the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture, and Honorary Associate of London's Royal Academy of Music.

Dick studied at the University of Texas with Dalies Frantz. He later became a Fulbright Scholar studying with Sir Clifford Frantz. His early triumphs were as a major prizewinner in Tchaikovsky, Busoni and Leventritt International Competitions. His career has been highlighted by acclaimed recitals and concerto performances in venues such as New York's Carnegie Hall, London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, Le Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and more.

In 1971, Dick established the Round Top Festival Institute in Round Top, Texas to nurture and incubate aspiring young musicians. The Festival Institute provides year-round education and performance programs for audiences. The 210-acre campus teaches nearly 100 young artists each year.

Anderson, entering his fourth year as director of La Sierra’s orchestral programs, has also served as music director for the Dana Point Symphony for more than four seasons. He is artistic director for Symphony Irvine and is frequently engaged as an orchestra clinician and with youth ensembles around the United States. His broad experience as an opera conductor includes directing the West Coast premiere of Daron Hagen’s “Little Nemo in Slumberland” with the La Sierra University Opera.

Anderson studied violin with John Mcleod and conducting with Edward Dolbashian at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of California, Los Angeles under the mentorship of Neal Stulberg.

Tickets are $15 general admission. Tickets purchased at the door are full price. The following discounts are available with online ticket purchases: $10 seniors age 55 and over, $5 for students and teachers. Children age 12 and under are free.
