REVO brings in thousands to fight injustice

Thanks to the efforts of La Sierra University students, a Washington D.C.-based global nonprofit will have about $11,000 more in its fight against human trafficking.

La Sierra University's second annual REVO fundraiser held May 15 featured its popular fashion show of creative clothing lines designed by students with some musical entertainment mixed in. REVO brought in thousands of dollars to benefit International Justice Mission, a faith-based human rights agency. The money was raised mainly through ticket sales and t-shirt sales and augmented by funds from an auction of the students' designs. IJM operates in 12 countries to aid in the prosecution of human traffickers and to help rescue and rehabilitate their victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.

Funds from the REVO event will assist IJM's efforts in Southeast Asia where much of the trafficking activity occurs. A $250 donation pays for the aftercare of one individual.<br/><br/>The student designers for this year's REVO fashion show each created a collection of six to 12 pieces ranging from outfits made of clear vinyl and worn over other clothes, stylish, intricate dresses made surprisingly of burlap, plastic bags and other recyclable materials, brightly-colored ballerina skirts and bright tights adorned in feather motifs and delicate butterfly wings, classic, sleek dresses and gowns, a men's line of super hero attire and other creative looks. The lines included student Meagan Miller's circus-themed outfits, a staged event featuring Miller in red-decorated top hat as the ringmaster and a parade of face-painted models in a cornucopia of shimmering and colorful dresses and outfits depicting the stylish, dramatic and cultural variety of a circus.

REVO, based in Hilo, Hawaii, is a movement that helps individuals find ways of raising money for their charitable causes. Its motto is “start a revolution, start with love.” REVO has branches around the United States and in Guam and Canada. La Sierra sister institutions Pacific Union College and Andrews University both have REVO chapters.<br/><br/>Jaylene Chung, a graduate business student at La Sierra, founded the campus's REVO chapter last year. The inaugural REVO event brought in $24,000 for the Gakoni Orphanage in Rwanda. The La Sierra chapter is seeking volunteers for its leadership team.
