REVO fashion event to aid Peru outreach

The REVO fundraiser returned to campus Sun., April 21 featuring the unique and beautiful fashion designs of La Sierra's students and a musical concert by husband-wife duo, Us. The event, attended by 200-300 people, was held under a white tent at the Glory of God's Grace sculpture plaza fronting the university. It ultimately raised more than $12,000 to benefit the AMOR Projects in Pucallpa, Peru. Monies were generated from $10 general admission fees, fashion show special seating tickets, t-shirt sales and donations.

All proceeds will help AMOR Projects purchase medical supplies and meet transportation needs. La Sierra University alumnus Martin Corona directs the project.

“Former student missionaries [to Pucallpa] mentioned how they would run out of medical supplies in their small clinic, some days seeing up to 100 patients a day,” Angela Payaban, REVO co-organizer said prior to the event. “Therefore, we are trying to raise as much money as possible to help stock up their medical supplies. They have also mentioned needing a truck to enable the missionaries to reach the more rural areas.”

Fashion show designer and La Sierra history and pre-law senior Jacqueline Flores designed seven outfits of a 10-piece line. She worked with fellow student designer Shane Wood on the project. Flores's pieces are mostly skirts created with Peruvian flair and color. She worked with clothing and items from thrift stores and re-working the material with embroidery and other elements to come up with the looks she envisioned. Flores began working on the line in February and dedicated about 10 hours a week to the effort. She was encouraged by the April edition of Vogue Paris magazine which featured a special Peruvian fashion section. “I felt so proud. It was like 'yeah, La Sierra is right on track',” said Flores. “It was a big inspiration to see what they've done.”

She and Wood selected a Peruvian look as a visual connection with REVO's fundraising cause. “We wanted to bring the cause much closer to home. It just makes it that much more valuable,” Flores said.

Flores has designed clothing lines for each of the previous two REVO events at La Sierra held in 2010 and 2011 in May. The events respectively benefitted the Gakoni Orphanage in Rwanda and the International Justice Mission, a faith-based human rights agency in Washington D.C. Collectively La Sierra REVO raised a total $34,000 for these causes.

REVO is a movement that helps individuals find ways of raising money for charitable efforts. Its motto is “start a revolution, start with love.” REVO has branches around the United States including at La Sierra sister schools Pacific Union College and Andrews University.
