Sweeten your weekend with top-notch chamber music

On Jan. 9, La Sierra's Director of String Studies Jason Uyeyama, violin, cellist Eric Sung, and concert pianist Vadim Serebryany will play mesmerizing, intricate works by classical masters Handel-Halvorsen, Beethoven, Debussy and Tchaikovsky. The trio's performance will take place at 7 p.m. in Hole Memorial Auditorium and is part of the Olson Chamber Music Series.

The program consists of G. F. Handel-J. Halvorsen's “Passacaglia for Violin and Cello,” Ludwig van Beethoven's “7 Variations in E-flat from Mozart's The Magic Flute,” Claude Debussy's “Three ´Etudes” and Pyotr llyich Tchaikovsky's “Trio in A Minor for Piano, Violin and Cello Op. 50.”

The performers have amassed a wealth of experience with some of the best orchestras and groups in the world and have studied with renowned musicians.

Uyeyama has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, and performs regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Highlights this season include chamber music performances at Festival Mozaic in San Luis Obispo and the Redlands Chamber Music Society, and a master class at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China.  He has appeared at internationally known music events including the Aspen Music Festival, Aspen, Colo. and the Tanglewood Music Festival in Stockbridge, Mass.

Uyeyama is also music director of outreach organization Community Kids Connection - Music, a collaborative program with Loma Linda University that provides mentoring/tutoring for underserved children in San Bernardino, Calif. Uyeyama received his master's degree from The Juilliard School in New York City. His primary teachers included Itzhak Perlman, Masao Kawasaki, Dorothy DeLay, and Yao-Ji Lin.

Sung is the associate principal of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and a member of the San Francisco Cello Quartet. He has studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and The Juilliard School.  His principal teachers have been Stephen Geber, David Geber, Ronald Leonard, Fred Sherry and Lynn Harrell.

Sung's festival performances include appearances at the Taos, Aspen, Tanglewood and San Luis Obispo Mozart festivals. He has performed in concert with the California E.A.R. Unit, Duke String Quartet, Joshua Bell, Stephen Copes, Alexander Kerr, John Graham, Lawrence Dutton, and Jeffrey Kahane.

Sung is a former member of the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra and served as assistant principal cellist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Opera Orchestra.

Audiences and critics on five continents have recognized Serebryany for his sensitive and intelligent music making. Natives of St. Petersburg, Russia, the Serebryanys settled in Toronto in 1977 where Vadim pursued musical studies with Marina Geringas.

Serebryany, an adjunct faculty member at La Sierra from 2005-08, is an honors graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and also holds bachelor and master's degrees from the prestigious Juilliard School. At the latter institution, he studied with Russia pianist Oxana Yablonskaya and the esteemed American pianist Jacob Lateiner. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from Yale University, studying under the brilliant Russian pianist and teacher Boris Berman.

Serebryany has performed in Europe, South America, Australia, Japan and throughout North America. Special projects include performing the complete Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin, as well as a two-year project to perform the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven in Toronto.

Serebryany has collaborated with such prominent artists as choreographer Mark Morris, baritone Gary Reylea, cellists Suren Bagratuni and Eugene Osadchy, violinists Mayumi Seiler, Almita Vamos, Julia Bushkova and Yosuke Kawasaki, as well as members of the American String Quartet, Enso Quartet, and the Glenn Gould String Quartet.
