Upcoming Events at La Sierra University

Riverside's Cory Barger, bassoonist, to play HMA. Cory Barger, a former Riverside resident and now a London-based musician, will perform a concert of classical works with Dr. Daniel Cummings, pianist and conductor of the La Sierra University Symphony Orchestra. The concert will be held Jan. 23, 7 p.m., at La Sierra's Hole Memorial Auditorium. The program will include Eugene Bozza's “Recit, Sicilienne et Rondo,” Gabriel Fauré's “Camile Saint-Saens,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's “Concerto in B Flat for Bassoon and Orchestra,” and William Walton's “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra,” as transcribed by Barger. In addition to performances in the United Kingdom, Barger has played concerts in India, China and Greece. She is a member of the London Mozart Symphony Orchestra and of her new chamber ensemble, Constellation, which is preparing an innovative concert series.

Cummings holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from UCLA and is pursuing post-doctoral studies with Dr. Stephen Tucker, assistant music professor and conductor at the University of California, Irvine. His musical performances and positions include a faculty post with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, chamber music coach for the UCLA Summer Music Academy, music director and conductor for the UCLA Music Theatre Workshop and assistant conductor of the UCLA Opera Workshop. He has also served as conducting assistant to John Mauceri of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and served as arranger and pianist for the Carol Burnett Awards.

A concert of baritone and piano music. Barsamian, a native of Bulgaria, has performed various operatic roles with the San Francisco Opera, the Merola Opera Program, the Sacramento Opera, the Nevada Opera and Opera Santa Barbara. At La Sierra University he played Papageno in a production of Mozart's “The Magic Flute,” and has twice won the district competition of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. He was also a U.S. finalist in the Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition.

Art Faculty Exhibit to showcase multi-media works by La Sierra University's gifted art teachers. Art Department Chair Beatriz Mejia-Krumbein together with art faculty Timothy Musso, Susan Patt, Terrill Thomas and adjunct faculty Susan Elizalde and Claudette Goux will show a variety of new work in a range of media including drawings, paintings, digital art, photography, ceramics, sculpture and books. The exhibit will be on display in the university's Brandstater Gallery Feb. 14 - March 3. A reception will be held Feb. 14, 6 - 8 p.m. Gallery hours are Mon. - Thurs., 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sun., 2 - 5 p.m. Admission is free. “String Spectacular,” featuring the La Sierra University Orchestra with the strings of the University of California, Irvine Symphony Orchestra. The group will perform Benjamin Britten's “Simple Symphony,” conducted by La Sierra's Dr. Daniel Cummings, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's “Serenade for Strings,” conducted by UC Irvine's Dr. Stephen Tucker. The UC Irvine Symphony Orchestra will also perform several works. The concert will take place Feb. 12, 2011, 7 p.m., La Sierra University Church. Tucker serves as assistant music professor and conductor at UC Irvine. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in orchestral conducting from the University of California, Los Angeles and diplomas in conducting from the Vienna Conservatory and the International Institute of Symphonic Conducting. At the latter institution he studied under Maestro Herbert Blomstedt, former music director of the San Francisco Symphony and the Dresden Staatskapelle.

His wide-ranging conducting experiences include leading the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra in Budapest; the Slovak Radio Symphony, Bratislava, Slovakia; serving as guest conductor of the “No Boundaries” concert at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, New York;  as conductor for “Fields of Wonder” recording with tenor Darryl Taylor and players of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Opera orchestras; and as guest conductor for “Opera Noir,” a tribute to Luther Vandross. 

Tucker has arranged, produced, and conducted on more than 15 recordings and served as composer on at least one feature film. He has served as guest conductor or cover conductor for the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Experience opera at La Sierra. Enjoy the beauty and pageantry of opera with performances from five operas and operettas at La Sierra University's Hole Memorial Auditorium. A cast of talented students accompanied by pianist Sergio Leiva will bring to life scenes from Hansel and Gretel, Die Fledermaus, the Mikado, Candide and The Old Maid and the Thief. Opera scenes will be performed Feb. 26 and 27 at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 general admission; $5 senior citizens, La Sierra University faculty, staff and students; $20 family admission; free admission for children age 12 and under.

International conductor, violinist to perform at La Sierra University. Scott Yoo, founder of the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra and a renowned violinist and conductor, will join a quartet of highly experienced musicians for an evening of works by Sergei Prokofiev, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. The concert will take place at La Sierra's Hole Memorial Auditorium, March 5, at 7 p.m. The group will consist of Yoo, violin, Jason Uyeyama, La Sierra's director of string studies, also on violin, Valerie Malvinni, viola, Madeleine Kabat, cello and Vadim Serebryanny, piano. The ensemble will perform Prokofiev's “Sonata for Two Violins in C Major, Op. 56,” Beethoven's “String Quartet in E-Flat Major, Op. 74 “Harp,” and Brahms' “Piano Quintet F minor, Op. 34.”

Admission is $10 general admission; $5 senior citizens, La Sierra University faculty, staff and students; $20 family admission; free admission for children age 12 and under.

Yoo began studying violin at age three and launched onto the performance scene at age 12 with a delivery of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He entered the conducting world when he founded the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra and has since guest conducted the Dallas, Colorado, Indianapolis, San Francisco and Utah symphonies. He regularly conducts the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and he made his Carnegie Hall debut with the group in November. He is continuing a tour and collaboration conducting a chamber orchestra with jazz pianist Brad Meldau who will perform a concert Jan. 21 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
