Times Higher Education/Wall Street Journal, or THE/WSJ publicized their 2020 college rankings on Sept. 4 rating 801 colleges and universities around the United States in four key areas or pillars – resources, engagement, outputs and environment. Scores were derived from an academic reputation survey, data from the U.S. Department of Education, and from a nationwide survey of more than 170,000 current students. La Sierra, joint-ranked as No. 2 for ‘Environment’ for 2020 retained its second place national standing in the 2019 rankings which had dropped one notch from its No. 1 national spot in the same category in rankings for 2017 and 2018 school years.

THE/WSJ rates a school’s environment on the diversity of its faculty, its numbers of international students, overall racial and ethnic diversity of its students, and on the inclusion of students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Overall THE/WSJ’s survey ranked La Sierra 93rd out of 122 colleges and universities in the West and placed it in the 501 – 600 range out of 801 institutions, a jump up from its placement in the 601 – 800 category the preceding three years.

Meanwhile, the long-running U.S News & World Report Best Colleges guide published its 2020 rankings on Sept. 9 with analysis of more than 1,900 schools. La Sierra tied for 53rd in Regional Universities West on a roster of 128 institutions across 15 western states, one step up the roster from last year. The university scored a strong 13 out of 113 regional western institutions for Top Performers in Social Mobility, a new category this year measuring the enrollment and graduation of economically disadvantaged students whose adjusted gross family incomes are under $50,000.

La Sierra moved up six points over last year’s U.S. News Best Value score to reach No. 23 out of 46 schools in the West, a category that analyzes “a school's academic quality, as indicated by its 2020 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking, and the 2018-2019 net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid,” U.S. News states.
